dancing in fields of daisies and wildflowers

Actually, I went running at the University today. I ran around the track. There is quite a bit of concrete between home & the track, but most of the run was on spongy track. The Doc didn't specifically condone or object to the track, so I decided to give it a go today. It was wonderful!

First, the breeze was just amazing as I rounded the north side of the track, away from the stands. The gentle 6 AM sunlight filtered through tragically beautiful, dark, grey rainclouds was so peaceful. I was so enraptured in the moment, I wouldn't even have minded if the clouds leaked a little rain on me. I saw birds looking for their morning worms, leaves dancing on the ends of tree branches, people walking to work, construction guys already slaving away, and even some other runners. I wondered if the other 2 guys doing laps at the track were gimpy like me, but we didn't speak. Just the "runner's nod". That's all.

I was only out for about 45 minutes, but my body felt it. It was work, but it was good. It was an accomplishment. My knee didn't hurt on the run, although it felt a little stiff as I climbed the stairs at home. I'm not sure what to make of that. I can feel the extra 5 lbs or so that I've put on--I seriously need to whittle on that. Ugh. But mostly, I was thrilled to not go to the gym today. My heart is happy.

Driving to work was a different story. Traffic lights not functioning, an accident making the situation worse, and construction in every direction as I tried to navigate around the first horrendous intersection. Ah, summertime! If not for some spirit-lifting music on the radio, the roads would have probably undone all of the good that the running done did.

I was thinking recently, with slight alarm, that winter is coming. It's getting darker and darker in the mornings when I'm getting up to exercise. But as long as the construction guys are still out there, it is not winter yet. I don't mind winter, per se. I love snow, but the cold is wearisome. Cold wind is evil; light, fluffy snow is heavenly. The darkness gets depressing after a while. But, why dwell on that now? It's obviously still summer... I'm buying fresh veggies at the farm market tonight!
